Discover the Hidden Treasure of Lycia: Gemiler Island

Gemiler Island is one of Turkey’s most special destinations, with its historical richness, unique nature, and tranquil atmosphere. If you find yourself in the Fethiye region, we strongly recommend adding Gemiler Bay and this historic island to your itinerary. Even just a few hours of exploration will offer you the combined magic of nature, history, and the sea.

The Unique History of Gemiler Island

Also known as St. Nicholas Island, Gemiler Island is located within the borders of Fethiye, Muğla, and captivates visitors with its historical character. With a history stretching back to the Byzantine period, the island serves as an open-air museum for history enthusiasts. Between the 4th and 6th centuries, Gemiler was used as a religious center and is associated with Saint Nicholas, an important figure in the Christian world (also known as Santa Claus). In ancient times, the island served as a stopover for pilgrims.

The remains of churches, chapels, and cisterns found on the island offer valuable insights into the religious architecture of the time. Moreover, while hiking the trail leading to the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking view and embark on a delightful journey through history. Listed on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, Gemiler Island draws attention not only with its natural beauty but also with its deep-rooted history.

Where is Gemiler Island Bay and How to Get There?

Gemiler Island Bay is located quite close to Kayaköy in Fethiye. Situated approximately 8 kilometers from Fethiye center, the bay is accessible both by land and sea. After reaching Gemiler Bay Beach via Kayaköy with your own vehicle, you can take small boats from there to the island. Those without a car can take minibuses from Fethiye to Kayaköy, and then walk or take a taxi to Gemiler Bay.

Visitors preferring a sea journey can reach the island through daily boat tours departing from Fethiye Harbor. Particularly, boat trips from Ölüdeniz and Kabak Bay stop by Gemiler Island, allowing visitors to swim and explore.

Places to See Around Gemiler Island Bay

The area around Gemiler Island isn’t limited to the island itself; its surroundings offer plenty to discover. Here are some must-see places near the island:

  • Kayaköy: An abandoned Greek village close to the island, known for its stone houses, narrow streets, and historic atmosphere.

  • Cold Water Bay (Soğuk Su Koyu): Located just east of the island, this bay is famous for its refreshingly cool waters, even during the hottest summer days.

  • Ölüdeniz: World-renowned for its paragliding and lagoon views, Ölüdeniz is only about 30 minutes away from Gemiler Island.

  • Babadağ: Famous for its sunset views and paragliding experiences, Babadağ is perfect for nature and adventure lovers.

Gemiler Island Beaches

Gemiler Island features small coves and natural swimming areas rather than large beaches. The tiny beaches surrounding the island are peaceful spots with crystal-clear waters. These areas are ideal for those seeking calm and a nature-immersed experience. Perfect for swimming and snorkeling, the shorelines offer a unique atmosphere away from the crowds.

Across from the island, Gemiler Bay Beach is more popular with day-trippers. It offers facilities such as cafes, restrooms, and sunbeds. This bay is suitable for families, couples, and campers alike and sees high demand during the summer season thanks to its calm sea.

Is There an Entrance Fee for Gemiler Island?

Apart from the boat ride required to reach the island, there is also an entrance fee to visit Gemiler Island. The Museum Pass is valid here, and a seasonal fee is charged to visitors. As of 2025, the entrance fee is expected to be around 90 TL per person. Students and individuals under the age of 18 can benefit from discounted rates.

If you arrive via an organized boat tour, this fee is usually included in the price. However, individual visitors must pay the fee upon arrival. Since there are no accommodation facilities on the island, it is only open to day visitors.
